It's understood that this course is an introduction and relying on the content of the course itself to develop a working understanding of the command line and shell scripting will not be enough. When I first took the course, I only stuck with the modules in the course. I got overwhelmed at the beginning of Module 4 with the practice project. It felt like I had been learning a foreign language for three weeks and was being asked to sustain a conversation with a native speaker. I do have years of programming experience with C, Matlab and Python so that didn't feel great. I came back a year later and ended up in the same boat. A friend recommended I pick up "The Linux Command Line" book (which I love and highly recommend). After reading most of the book, I came back to the practice project (weather report). It was much easier and I had a great time working on it (I am still improving it). I thought the concepts being tested in this project and the progression is really nice. However, looking at the solutions, it is clear that most of them are hard-coded and not dynamic, which promotes bad coding practices for students who don't have any coding experience. Some of the syntax in the final project are also outdated. I expected a bit better from IBM teachers. You are given most of the answers in the final project since the modules don't really cover the concepts that are tested in it. This means that the final project isn't really hard but doesn't make you feel like you could do it on your own. The whole course is great as a refresher of the concepts but not so much for building a solid foundation from the ground. I wish I had studied the book first and then done the course. I know this is content that is difficult to present in a limited number of bite-sized modules.

This course was not very well thought out. The final project uses concepts that were not covered in the course, so it just gives you code snippets to copy/paste into your final script. The weather example was good for showing how to retrieve a web page, manipulate the data, and build a report, but it was not practical (if you actually wanted to do that, you would want to use an API, not scraping an entire webpage with content that can change structure / layout / formatting at any time, and grepping / filtering out the pieces of data you want). I skipped through to the quiz at the end of the first two modules since I've been using linux for years, so I can't really comment on that portion; but the shell scripting modules could have been much better and more practical.

Las clases están muy bien explicadas y algunos recursos son adecuados, pero en la etapa final no me convence la forma de evaluar y los reactivos del examen final las respuestas no estan bien sincronizadas con las preguntas.

The final assignment plagiarism assessment is not good, because when doing it there is definitely a similar possibility because the final assignment being done is still basic, not something complicated.

Very basic course and did not cover a lot of daily routine work required as part of shell scripting

The labs are pretty hard to follow, but it does cover a lot of content.
